Special exhibition from 31 August 2024 to 2 February 2025
An exhibition of the Silesian Museum in Görlitz in cooperation with the Dresden State Art Collections and the Görlitz Collections of History and Culture.
The presentation is a contribution to the Jacob Böhme jubilee years 2024 and 2025 in Görlitz and Zgorzelec.
Vernissage with concert: 30 August 2024, 6-9 pm, in the Silesian Museum in Görlitz
Explore the world of thought of Jacob Böhme (1575-1624), a shoemaker from Görlitz who is one of the most important German thinkers! His fundamental ideas have had a lasting influence on literature, philosophy, religion and art over the centuries.
From a time of wars and catastrophes, Jacob Böhme passes on his vision of the future. He was convinced that the world would change if people changed. Referring to the lily as a symbol of hope and renewal, he called the coming era of peace the ‘Lily Age’.
The exhibition presents Böhme's basic ideas and illustrates the criticism he encountered as a writing craftsman and mystical philosopher in Görlitz. Böhme's handwritten texts were distributed solely through his networks in Silesia and Upper Lusatia. It becomes clear that they were primarily received in the Netherlands and England and how they reached their current storage locations in the 20th century via winding paths.
The show continues the Dresden State Art Collections' international exhibition series on Jacob Böhme. In Görlitz, the presentation is particularly fascinating thanks to valuable loans from the Upper Lusatian Library of Sciences. Attractive multimedia offerings enrich the exhibition experience and provide an opportunity to take a seat and immerse oneself in Jacob Böhme's thoughts.
A booklet in German, Polish and English guides visitors through the exhibition.
